We all knew Android is the best-selling smartphone OS in the US (and worldwide for that matter), but the latest ComScore report shows that it has gone even further. The published chart shows that the Google OS has just overtaken BlackBerry and has taken the number one spot in terms of total subscribers in the three-month holiday period ranging from the start of November to the end of January.
According to the data gathered by surveying some 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, the Android market share has climbed by 7.7% percent to 31.2%. iOS also gained 0.1% of market share to reach 24.7%.
The biggest losers over the past three months were RIM and their BlackBerry OS, which saw its market share shrink by 5.4% down to 30.4%.
Despite the aggressive marketing Windows Phone 7 devices account for only 8 percent of all smartphones in the US. webOS didn't enjoy a particularly successful quarter either losing another 0.7% and going down to 3.9%.
ComScore also listed the manufacturers standing, which shows the total market share of each company, including feature phones. Samsung is in the lead there with 24.9% (up 0.7% over previous quarter), followed by LG with 20.8% (down 0.2%), Motorola with 16.5% (down 1.2%) and RIM with 8.6% (down 0.7%). Apple comes last here, but its 7% of market share is quite the achievement considering that they are only offering a couple of models.
